ABOUT THE PANELISTS
Fiona W. Ong is an employment law attorney at Shawe Rosenthal, “Management’s Workplace Lawyers.” She defends employers in the areas of employment discrimination, wrongful discharge, and wage/hour regulation, both in court and before federal and state agencies. She also provides advice to managers and human resources on a wide variety of personnel matters, and conducts training on harassment, reasonable accommodations, and other issues for both supervisors and employees. She prepares employee handbooks and personnel policies. She assists government contractors in complying with affirmative action obligations. Fiona serves as General Counsel to the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Chamber’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Fiona also co-chairs the Maryland Chamber’s Employment Issues Committee, and has testified before the General Assembly regarding various employment bills. She has presented at the local and national level, including the annual conference of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and the Maryland State Bar Association, as well as the Maryland Chamber of Commerce’s Employment Law Conference. Fiona has authored or contributed to several books on labor and employment law, and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Mary J. Mullarkey of the Colorado Supreme Court before beginning her law practice.
Chanté Kennedy is the Human Resources Director at Rommel Construction, a commercial mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services contractor that provides “air, power, and water that bring a building to life.” After earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from Grendal University in Washington, DC, she worked in outreach, human resources, and administration for UnitedHealth Group, Total Healthcare, and Brinton Woods in Baltimore, and for Culinary Services Group in Westminster. She has been with Rommel Construction in Linthicum since 2019, focusing on HR services and recruiting candidates for employment.
Jay Stephan is the Field Operations Manager for Diversified Safety Services, a full-service occupational safety and health consulting firm. Jay also worked for Fidelity Engineering as the Mid-Atlantic Safety Manager and with Baltimore Contractors and Jeffrey Brown Contracting as a construction superintendent. He is a Certified CPR/AED & First Aid Instructor and is an OSHA 500 Certified OTI Instructor. He focuses on business development, team management, environment, health, and safety (EHS), accident investigation, and workplace and construction site safety. His clients value his diverse experience, flexibility, ability to communicate effectively, and his comprehensive expertise regarding policies and procedures, staffing needs, and project priorities.
Richard Shaw is a Senior Client Executive at RCM&D in Towson. He has been in the risk management & insurance industry since the mid 1980’s, working with several regional and national brokerages. His experience is vast and has included new business development/production, account management, customer retention, and marketing new and renewal insurance programs. He has worked with a diverse group of customers including trade associations, association management companies, construction contractors, real estate, media & entertainment, publishing, technology, non-profits, and private schools varying in size to multi-million-dollar premium accounts. He is a recognized expert in Workers Compensation exposure review and analysis, and focuses on improving his clients’ bottom lines.
