DON'T FALL FOR POP-UP SCREEN HIJACKS

As subcontractors and professionals in the construction industry, our computers are essential tools for managing projects, communicating with clients, and handling important documentation. However, amidst our busy workdays, we must remain vigilant against online threats, including scareware attacks.

IS MY COMPUTER REALLY INFECTED WITH A VIRUS?!?!

Imagine this scenario: you’re diligently working at your computer, managing project timelines or reviewing blueprints, when suddenly, a pop-up notification hijacks your screen. It declares that your PC is infected with a virus and urgently prompts you to “click here” to run a scan or install antivirus software. It’s a common scareware tactic employed by hackers to lure unsuspecting users into downloading malicious software.

STEPS TO TAKE WITH A SCAREWARE POP-UP

It’s crucial to recognize that no legitimate system alert or software update will ever appear in this manner. Regardless of how convincing the pop-up looks, the safest action is to never click on it. Instead, follow these steps to protect your system and data:

  • Close Your Browser: Avoid clicking on any part of the pop-up, including the X, “Close,” or “Cancel” button. Simply close your browser immediately. Clicking on anything within the pop-up or site could trigger a virus download.
  • Use Task Manager: If closing the browser doesn’t work, access your task manager (hold Control + Alt + Delete on a PC or Command + Option + Esc on a Mac) to force quit the browser or application displaying the pop-up.
  • Notify IT: Inform your IT department or technical support team immediately. They can perform a thorough scan to ensure your computer remains secure and hasn’t been compromised by the scareware.

By following these steps, you can safeguard your computer and prevent potential data breaches or system infections. Remember, staying informed and cautious is key to maintaining cybersecurity in our digitally driven industry.
