Baltimore County Secures $80 Million in State grants to propel school construction projects
Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski has announced an additional $80 million in state grant funds to bolster ongoing school construction projects. Olszewski specifically announced the following allocations:
Maryland's commitment to school construction and renovation
• $26 million in additional funds towards a new Lansdowne High School; • $20 million in additional funds towards a like-new Towson High School; • $15 million in additional funds towards a new Deer Park Elementary School; • $10 million towards in additional funds a new Scott’s Branch Elementary School; • $8 million in additional funds towards a new addition at Dundalk High School; and • $1 million in additional funds towards a new addition at new Pine Grove Middle School.
The $80 million grant is part of Maryland’s pass-through block grant funds, as outlined in Md. Laws, Ch. 344 (SB 291). These one-time funds, administered by the Maryland Interagency Commission on School Construction (IAC), have been awarded to Baltimore County for selected school construction projects. Alongside the grant, Baltimore County has already made substantial investments in school construction, with an additional nearly $210 million allocated in Olszewski’s recently approved FY24 budget. This dedicated approach aligns with Olszewski’s comprehensive plan to improve every school in Baltimore County over a 15-year span, aiming to eliminate the reliance on trailers within a decade while making significant investments in various areas of education.
By infusing these grant funds into ongoing projects, Baltimore County can expedite progress and set the stage for future critical initiatives. This includes the realization of a new Dulaney High School, addressing high school overcrowding in the Northeast and Southeast regions, plans for a new CTE Center in Northwest Baltimore County, and more. Baltimore County’s commitment to these projects promises a brighter future for students and underscores their dedication to providing quality education in state-of-the-art facilities.
